Optical Close Range Measurement Techniques for Cultural Heritage From 3D data Generation to Analysis – with Hands-on Demonstration
Dirk Rieke-Zapp, Bernd Breuckmann and Vera Moitinho

This tutorial is aimed at novice as well as advanced users and people interested in optical close range metrology systems for collection of 3-dimensional data from cultural heritage objects. The authors will present a short overview of available measurement tools with special emphasis on fringe projection scanners that will be on display for hands-on demonstration in the second part of the tutorial. The three presentations are concerned with an introduction to close range 3-dimensional scanning in cultural heritage from acquisition to analysis of the collected data. Advantages as well as shortcomings of different metrology systems will be highlighted and an outlook towards future hardware and software solutions for faster, more automated scanning and analysis will be presented.

Outline
  • 3D documentation of cultural heritage objects in museums and collections – state-of-the-art and future outlook. Dirk Rieke-Zapp, 20 min. + 10 min. discussion. This presentation will present current state-of-the–art technology of optical close range metrology with special emphasis on fringe projection systems. It will set the stage for the following talk as well as the hands-on part on more detailed concepts and applications. Results from different research projects will be utilized to visualize and compare different techniques and to show developments that may be expected in the near future.
  • Metrology aspects in 3D scanning. Bernd Breuckmann, 20 min. + 10 min. discussion. 3D scanners are mainly used as digitization or measuring device. It is evident that the specifications of a measuring device must be verified at regular intervals, in particular for industrial purposes. However, a lot of users in cultural heritage are not aware of such need or they are not familiar with the corresponding procedures. However for documentation, archiving and any kind of measuring purpose it is essential, that the user is verifying the relevant quality parameters, especially the measuring accuracy.
  • Quantitative analysis of rock cultural heritage objects – from field data acquisition towards analysis and interpretation. Vera Moitinho, 20 min. presentation + 10 min. discussion. The aim of this presentation is to provide meaningful information towards a better comprehension of Cultural Heritage (CH) objects. Different strategies for field data acquisition (3D scanning), processing, description and geometrical analysis are presented, in order to understand to what extent distinct methodological approaches and technical choices determine the analysis and interpretation of CH objects.
