Managing Artefacts Information Using CHISel
J.C. Torres, L. López, C. Romo, P. Cano, A. León, D. Martín

Conventional information systems are frequently used to document Cultural Heritage sites. These systems are adequate for some specific purposes as they can store and retrieve a large amount of heterogeneous documents.

Nevertheless, this is not enough for research and conservation. Researchers need to be able to find out the relationships between data, and very frequently these relationships are spatial relationships that can be established using a 3D representation of the artefact. A new kind of information system is needed to achieve this goal, for which the 3D representation of the object must be theblackboard on which all the data is represented.

This tutorial aims to describes the use of CHISel, a documentation tool that is designed as a GIS-like software for 3D cultural heritage, implementing the concept of a Cultural Heritage Information System (CHIS).

CHISel is an experimental system, it has been designed to evaluate a new concept, and so it has not been programmed as a final product. Nevertheless it has been used for real applications and we hope it can also be useful for you.

Outline
  1. Introduction (30'): Concept of spatial information system. Geometric models. Structuring information using information layers. Types of layers. Indexation method used by CHISel. Resolution. Developing a project.
  2. Working with CHSel (15'): How to import models. Parameter for the indexation method. Model visualization. How to save and load models. Disk file structure for a model.
  3. Creating layers (30'): Deciding the type for the layer. Resolution of the layer. Parameter. How to create a layer. Modifying the structure of existing layers.
  4. Editing layers (20'): Interactive edition of layers. Adding values. Assigning values to the object.
  5. Queering and reporting (20'): Review of the different types of queries: point queries, area query and value query.
  6. Operations (60'): Detailed explanation of purpose and functionality of the most important types of spatial operations, including algebraic operations, creating layer from geometric values (roughness, orientation, curvature), neighbourhood analysis, conversion between numeric and record layers.
