Developing A Mixed Reality Interactive Application for Cultural HeritageGiovanni Landi, Federico Fasce and Matteo Ventrella
This full-day tutorial will guide the participants through all the steps needed for the development of a Mixed Reality Application. Emerging hardware and software visualization tools allow new ways of adding value to 3d datas, e.g. using it as key asset for innovative outreach and communication activities. This tutorial will cover all the steps needed to move from a simple 3d reconstruction of an object to an engaging interactive user experience.
The instructors will introduce the participants to the Unity3d render engine and its basic components. The integration and use of external tools like the METAIO sdk for AR, and OCULUS sdk for VR, will be explained. The key concepts of UX design for Augmented and Virtual Reality applications will be analyzed together with basic Gamification and Game Design principles. All participants will need to be equipped with their own medium performance laptop (PC or Mac). All the needed software will be provided (in their free versions) by the instructors. A choice of 3d assets to work with will be also provided, ranging from small objects to bigger 3d meshes.
During the second part of the tutorial participant will be asked to choose between AR and VR for their final application, depending on what kind of 3d material they would like to use and the UX they have in mind after the first part of the tutorial. Participants can also decide to form small groups to share skills and materials to finish their AR/VR project. The final result of the tutorial will be a basic, fully functional AR or VR interactive application.
