Tu 99 - Optical Close Range ... (I)
Optical Close Range Measurement Techniques for Cultural Heritage From 3D Data Generation to Analysis – with Hands-on Demonstration
Dirk Rieke-Zapp, Bernd Breuckmann and Vera Moitinho

This tutorial is aimed at novice as well as advanced users and people interested in optical close range metrology systems for collection of 3-dimensional data from cultural heritage objects. The authors will present a short overview of available measurement tools with special emphasis on fringe projection scanners that will be on display for hands-on demonstration in the second part of the tutorial. The three presentations are concerned with an introduction to close range 3-dimensional scanning in cultural heritage from acquisition to analysis of the collected data. Advantages as well as shortcomings of different metrology systems will be highlighted and an outlook towards future hardware and software solutions for faster, more automated scanning and analysis will be presented.

Outline
  • 3D documentation of cultural heritage objects in museums and collections – state-of-the-art and future outlook. Dirk Rieke-Zapp, 20 min. + 10 min. discussion. This presentation will present current state-of-the–art technology of optical close range metrology with special emphasis on fringe projection systems. It will set the stage for the following talk as well as the hands-on part on more detailed concepts and applications. Results from different research projects will be utilized to visualize and compare different techniques and to show developments that may be expected in the near future.
  • Metrology aspects in 3D scanning. Bernd Breuckmann, 20 min. + 10 min. discussion. 3D scanners are mainly used as digitization or measuring device. It is evident that the specifications of a measuring device must be verified at regular intervals, in particular for industrial purposes. However, a lot of users in cultural heritage are not aware of such need or they are not familiar with the corresponding procedures. However for documentation, archiving and any kind of measuring purpose it is essential, that the user is verifying the relevant quality parameters, especially the measuring accuracy.
  • Quantitative analysis of rock cultural heritage objects – from field data acquisition towards analysis and interpretation. Vera Moitinho, 20 min. presentation + 10 min. discussion. The aim of this presentation is to provide meaningful information towards a better comprehension of Cultural Heritage (CH) objects. Different strategies for field data acquisition (3D scanning), processing, description and geometrical analysis are presented, in order to understand to what extent distinct methodological approaches and technical choices determine the analysis and interpretation of CH objects.

Pa 108 - Virtualization and the Democratization ...
Virtualization and the Democratization of Heritage and Archaeology
Herbert Maschner and Matthew Vincent

This panel will highlight and openly discuss a new multi-million dollar research initiative to make some of the world important archaeological collections available on line for global research access. The key to making archaeological collections relevant in the twenty-first century is through the creation of virtual repositories with built –in analytical tools. While many museums and archaeological repositories are now making efforts in 3D visualization, virtual collections, and integrated database management presentations, we must take this further by putting entire collections online in a virtual repository. The goal of the Democratization of Science Project is to use 3D technologies to put entire archaeological collections, or entire museums, online so that any student, any child, any scientist, or any politician, anywhere, can do their own analyses. We suspect that important scientific and educational advancements are often not made simply because people do not have access to the collections. We hope to change this by democratizing access through virtualization, and we have developed the model for how this should be done and implemented the first examples. A new global $10 million project has been funded to get this initiative started.

W 85 - The Role of Similarity ... (I)
The Role of Similarity in the Re-unification, Re-assembly and Re-association of 3D Artefacts
Michela Spagnuolo and Bianca Falcidieno

Digital manipulation and analysis of tangible cultural objects has the potential to bring about a revolution in the way classification, stylistic analysis, or refitting of fragments is handled in the cultural heritage area: 3D modelling, processing and analysis are now mature enough to allow handling 3D digitized objects as if they were physical, and semantic models allow for a rich documentation of many different aspects of artefacts or assets of any complexity, as well as of contextual information about them.

In this context, the workshop was promoted by the recently started EC project GRAVITATE with the aim of bringing together researchers and professionals in Cultural Heritage contributing their perspective on the impact of digital techniques on re-unification, re-assembly and re-association of fragmented or dispersed cultural assets. Similarity evaluation is underlying most of these challenges. Comparative reasoning on artefacts and artifact's properties may relate to geometric attributes (e.g., spatial extent, aspect), to colorimetric properties (e.g., colour, texture), to specific traits that fragments exhibit (e.g., decorations), or to metadata documenting the artefacts. The workshop programme will give an overview of how computational similarity is addressed by ongoing research activities and European projects, and how it can be used at the geometric and semantic level for artefact and fragment analysis, supported by advanced digitalization techniques.

The workshop programme can be of interest for scientists and CH professionals and  curators, who could learn about the  recent developments in the field of shape analysis and semantic description of 3D digital artefacts and contribute to the discussion with their own experience.
