Maria del Mar Villafranca Jiménez studied History of Art in Granada University in 1984. Her specialist researches of heritage was manifested in her Doctoral Thesis dedicated to the origin and History of the Granada's museums. She is a cultural management and museology expert. From 2000 to 2004 she was General Director of heritage institutions in Andalucía where she developed new TICs interesting projects: the virtual library of Andalucía, the virtual visits of museums of Andalucía and the data base of collections museums in the same region. She was deputy-president of the Museo Picasso in Málaga at the same time.

Since June 2004 to July 2015 was the general Director of the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife. During her responsibility she has achieved a very important Master plan of management of the Alhambra. This plan is a reference for international heritage community. This plan has been considered example of guide of good practice in sustainable tourism and an integral vision of heritage. One of the strategic of this plan is dedicated to relations between the Alhambra and new technology of Information and Communication.

She is author of many books, papers and articles about museology, heritage and cultural management and was the general director of the restoration process of the fountain of the lions of the Alhambra.
